To reach Hainan Island by train is actually by the train ferry which is a method of transporting entire trains across rivers, lakes, or seas using giant ferries. The train ferry accross the Qiongzhou Strait is the first cross-sea train ferry line in China.

When the train reaches the seaside, it is divided into four sections, and the train cars are transported onto the ferry using specialized machinery. During the process of separating the train, passengers are not allowed to disembark and must remain in their respective positions. However, they can enjoy the surrounding scenery through the windows. Once the ferry reaches its destination, the train cars are transported to the land by a towing vehicle for reconnection, and the journey continues to the train station.

Jenny's Tip: if you don't want to spend much time on the way, it is better to take a flight.

Hainan West Railway started from Apr.18, 2007 with a length of 363.8km, north from Haikou, south to Sanya and is connected to the mainland by the cross-strait channel passageway. At the moment, there are train schedule from Sanya to Beijing, Shanghai ,Guangzhou and Haikou. It’s another nice choice for you to reach Haikou or Sanya. Jenny’s tip: It takes around 1 hour by taxi from Haikou Railway Station to Haikou Meilan Airport, so if you want to catch flight after the train in Haikou, you’d better arrange your time schedule properly.
